Time Travel

Bill Gates gave this brief TED talk FIVE YEARS AGO.

Yet he spoke directly to our current crisis. Perhaps his great wealth allowed him to assemble a time machine? Did any politician listen to him and take his suggestions to heart? I doubt it. Making intelligent preparations for unseen danger doesn’t get anyone re-elected.

Hopefully the $10-$20 trillion dollars of wealth destruction from this current crisis will change the way we select our leaders and the way they make decisions on our behalf?

Gates has been too much of a lone voice asking the world to prepare.

But he was not alone – rather he had the best pulpit though. Even then few listened to him.

The French short film – The Jetty from 1962 also is about this, as is the longer film picking up some of The Jetty’s theme “12 Monkeys,” which I liked and watched twice when it came out.

There are SciFi books with themes that correlate as well.

Preparedness is like the Spare Tire in your trunk. Having that spare cost you money upfront, costs you money as you go along in fuel, reduces your trunk’s storage space, and is suddenly a golden purchase when you have a flat making that spare the only way your are going to get home.

I had meant to include this 17th century quote, when London was in plague:

On hearing ill rumour that Londoners may soon be urged into their lodgings by Her Majesty’s men, I looked upon the street to see a gaggle of striplings making fair merry, and no doubt spreading the plague well about. Not a care had these rogues for the health of their elders!

– Samuel Pepys Diaries – London 1664

So some thing never change? Guess it is because we always remain most human?
